About the CWA

The Constituent Women’s Agenda (CWA) empowers women to capitalize on their constituency. As a non-partisan network, the CWA advocates social justice, economic security, pollitical empowerment, and racial equality for women at all levels.

We do this through initiating grassroots campaigns, community education and leadership development seminars, and political participation.

The CWA was formed by a group of motivated men and women who came together for a conference in the 1980's. These men and women encompassed a full spectrum of constituents - from race, to economic standing, to religion.

What was their motiviation? The dream to shift the focus of government spending from military preparedness to humanitarian needs.

The CWA achieved the status of a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the mid 1990's. Since then the CWA has placed great emphasis on fighting racism. We believe that the first step to meeting the humnitarian needs of everyone is abolishing racial preferance and segregation.

Our ultimate goals are:

  1. network female energy to empower women to take action on their own behalf.
  2. create learning opportunities for women to develop leadership skills and cultivate the confidence to make a difference as advocates for social change.
  3. initiate a statewide network starting from the ground up that will take significant action in promoting economic security and social justice for women and minority groups.
  4. Actively undermine the prevalent attitude of racism and social discrimination that perpetuates the imbalance in the quality of life between races, genders, and classes.

We run a full gamet of programs to further these goals:

  • Racial equality and anti-racism seminars
  • Local and statewide advocacy
  • Organized grassroots and community building campaigns
  • Empowerment book club and forum
  • W.I.V.E.S. - Women's Initiative for Voting and Economic Security
  • Mothers' Reorientation Program
  • Math for Moms
  • Minority Job Placement

We hope to begin a new program that reaches out to women on the streets and in prisions in the near future. These women stand to benefit greatly from political empowerment and advocacy.

The CWA makes decisions horizontally - i.e. there is no top to bottom bureaucracy that effectively cuts out the minority opinions. The CWA board welcomes women of all types to participate... our members include women of color, single mothers and/or women of low-income, lesbians, and women from minority religions.

Did you know that the hourly wage needed to earn a respectable living as a full time worker in our state is $19.45. The average wage earned by women in our state does not even reach that and is significantly lower than the average wage earned by men.
