2006 Success Story - SB134

Through two of our coalitions (AFDC, All Families Deserve a Chance, and Women’s FAN, Women and Family Action Network), CWA played a major role in the passing of SB 134 (Elimination of the Asset Test for TANF).

SB 134, sponsored by Senator Sandoval and Representative Boyd, was passed by the legislature and recently signed by the Governor.  The bill raises the TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) asset limit to $15,000 from $2,000 and excludes retirement, education and health savings accounts when it takes effect in October 2006.

These changes: 1) allow low-income families who can to build and maintain a personal safety net, to bridge their way to self-sufficiency; 2) allow families to have a small emergency fund to prevent a return to TANF or Medicaid; 3) encourage savings among low-income families, and 4) treat different retirement and health care savings plans equally under TANF.

The Colorado Women’s Agenda and over 30 other organizations helped support the passage of SB134.  Now we would like you to help us improve how we support legislation.

LET US AT COLORADO WOMEN’S AGENDA KNOW HOW YOU HELPED PASS SB 134 IN THE STATE OF COLORADO! Please complete and return the survey below:
